To lead the media relations function with a primary focus on drafting news releases for BBB National Program's (NP) programs, and developing relationships with relevant media. Participate in, contribute to and support other areas of activity - e.g., communications and marketing - for New York-based advertising and privacy self-regulation programs. While reporting to BBB NP's Director of Communications, this position will be based in New York and on a day-to-day basis will work with BBB NP Program Managers to write, edit, obtain approvals for and oversee distribution of news releases and other communications as required by the programs. The position will execute the mission and vision of BBB NP's self-regulation programs in all media relations, communications, and marketing work.
Quickly and efficiently produce news releases, editorial briefings, fact sheets, and other material aimed at informing the media of specific actions resulting from the adjudication of challenges and/or complaints filed with one of BBB NP's programs
Develop narratives that increase positive visibility for BBB NP and its self-regulation programs, specifically those programs located in the New York office
Work closely with leadership of BBB NP programs (particularly Advertising Self-Regulator Council (ASRC), the National Advertising Division (NAD), the Children's Advertising Review Council (CARU), and the Electronic Retailing Self-Regulation Program (ERSP)) to develop and oversee a media relations contact list that reflects the needs of those programs
Plan and produce content related to BBB NP programs
Assume primary responsibility for media monitoring and distribution tools such as Cision, and ensure that appropriate BBB NP Marcom staff is trained on their uses and functions
Develop and maintain an editorial calendar of timely narratives that promote the work of BBB NP programs
Negotiate terms of BBB NP program news releases with interested third parties
Work closely with subject matter experts to ensure content accuracy and consistency of messaging across BBB NP programs
Participate as a member of BBB NP's Marcom team with special emphasis on matters concerning media relations and/or emerging issues that may impact BBB NP or any of its programs
Develop, maintain and adjust as necessary a media relations plan to generate positive visibility and address issues that may impact the organization's positive marketplace profile or its credibility
Determine key messages and select/direct appropriate spokespeople to both generate and respond to inquiries and interview requests from news media across all communications platforms
Work collaboratively with BBB NP Marcom leadership and staff
Collect and disseminate media coverage of emerging issues, including cases and articles on advertising law issues
Work collaboratively with the social media manager to maintain current social media platforms and content and explore outreach and expansion opportunities for BBB NP messaging
Marketing Support (secondary function):
Working with others on the BBB NP Marcom team and with Program Managers, support events and event communications with particular emphasis on those featuring BBB NP New York staff or programs, including:
Staff speaking engagements
Work closely with National Partner Program and support BBB NP events and range of communications featuring self-regulatory staff or programs
As member of the BBB NP Marcom team, develop and distribute marketing collateral as appropriate.
